What are the Possible Treatments for Cat Strokes?

Feline strokes are not similar to human strokes and are less fatal than human. There are two kinds of strokes which are common among cats. They are ischemic stroke and hemorrhagic stroke. Ischemic stroke is caused due to insufficient supply of blood to the brain which hampers the release of oxygen in the brain causing damage to the brain cells.

Hemorrhagic stroke is caused due to the breakage of the blood vessels which results in the release of blood inside the brain. Treatment for feline stroke centers on the main cause that triggered the stroke. In certain cases where strokes are caused due to a primary medical condition such as diabetes or thyroid disease, the underlying medical condition has to be controlled first in order to treat the stroke. When a stroke is triggered by an accidental injury or by brain inflammation, compassionate supervision and medication are recommended.

Medications that are effective in controlling the enduring effects of stroke consist of anti-seizure medications and anti-inflammatory medications like the corticosteroids which help to restrict the brain swelling. In certain severe cases of strokes intravenous fluid treatment is given to fight the shock. Healing from feline strokes can take days or sometimes even months depending on the damage caused by the disease.
