There are a lot of tests to determine if a dog is struggling with Hypothyroidism. The reason why there are so many tests is because it depends on the symptoms that the dog is having. After the dog is tested for Hypothyroidism and it is confirmed then the treatment for it will begin.
The treatment for Hypothyroidism in dogs is usually very easy. The medication used is called the thyroxine or either the levothyroxine. There are a lot of names for this drug but they all work the same. It all depends as to what the tests show to help determine the dose that is needed. At first a standard does of the thyroxine is given to the dog and after that samples of blood are required periodically. The samples are needed to help with being able to adjust the medication. Once the dog starts treatment then the dog is usually put on that medication for life. This is to help prevent the symptoms from coming back and to reduce them.
With some dogs the treatment given for Hypothyroidism might start working right away while other dogs it might take a few months or even up to a year before the symptoms start clearing up.
