How to Treat a Cat with High Blood Sugar?
|
In order to treat feline diabetes effectively it is first necessary for the vet to understand the type of diabetes the cat is suffering from by carefully diagnosing the symptoms. The most effective form of oral medication used for treating feline diabetes is a drug called Glipizide. This medicine helps to lower the blood glucose level in the cat’s body. Glipizide is most effective in treating diabetes symptoms which are mild in nature. This medicine should be used only with the vet’s recommendation. In the initial stage of Glipizide treatment the cat should be kept under close observation to see if the animal is effectively responding to the treatment or not. Insulin shots needs to be given to those cats that cannot be given Glipizide treatment. These shots need to be given to the diabetic cat once or twice daily. Along with the insulin shots or with the Glipizide treatment it is necessary for the cat owner to closely monitor the sugar level in the cat’s urine with the help of urine tests strips. These strips help to determine the level of sugar in the cat’s blood and also help to detect the amount of ketones present in the cat’s urine. But compared to blood test these strips are less accurate. Moreover diabetic cats need to be given a diet that is rich in protein and low in carbohydrates.
