How to treat Feline Calicivirus?

No specific treatment is available for feline calicivirus. Besides severe pneumonia the treatment for this disease is supportive and is provided on outpatient basis. For treating secondary bacterial infections antibiotics are used. For anorexic and dehydrated cats, nursing care should be used. In condition of polyarthritis, use of Corticosteroids and azathioprine proves to be beneficial. The use of Corticosteroids on cats should be monitored carefully so that it does not worsen the infection in the upper respiratory system. During feline calicivirus make sure that your cat drinks and eat enough and offer them the food which taste and smell good to them. If the cats have ulcers in their mouth then they should be given soft food. The eyes and the nose of the cats should be kept clean and discharge if any should be cleaned from time to time. The room of the cats should be well ventilated, lighted and warm. Oxygen therapy is used through a facemask when there is difficulty in breathing.  The cats can also be put in the bathroom when hot shower is running or humidifier can also used to break the mucus in the upper airway. For controlling feline calicivirus in kennels and catteries, use of Quarantine proves to be an effective way.
