What are the Symptoms of High Blood Sugar in Cats?

Feline diabetes is mostly triggered by hyperthyroidism, pancreatitis and due to the use of medicines like megestrol acetate and certain corticosteroids. Diabetes often causes obesity in cats. Compared to female cats, male cats are more at risk to become obese due the presence to high blood sugar in their body.

Cats suffering from diabetes will show high level of glucose in their blood and urine due to anxiety. In such cases cats need to be taken for repeated urine glucose test in order to closely monitor their body glucose levels. Moreover malfunction of the kidney due to antifreeze poisoning during diabetes can also raise the feline glucose level in the urine and blood. During diabetes the body fails to perform glucose metabolism which leads to the formation of ketones in the cat’s blood. High levels of ketones in the blood cause ketoacidosis, which causes severe difficulties in breathing and eventually leads to coma.

The later stage of feline diabetes causes vomiting, acetone breath, loss of appetite, difficulty in breathing, muscle weakness, dehydration, and lethargy. All of these symptoms found in the advanced stage of diabetes in the cat’s body eventually lead to coma. Compared to dogs, cataracts among cats due to diabetes is quite rare.
