Can a Cat Suffer from Asthma?

Asthma is a lung disorder that is caused due to the obstructions in the bronchial tubes. These obstructions are caused by narrowing of these air passages which leads to breathing troubles of sorts. In cats, this condition is called feline allergic asthma.

The precise cause of the progression of asthma in cats is still un-known; however, specialists blame its hypersensitivity as one of the enticers of this disorder. Cats between the age group of two to eight years are most susceptible of developing this condition. Further, it has been well observed that the female cats are twice more likely to experience the outburst of asthma, in comparison to the male cats. Feline asthma is not associated with any one season.

It can progress and distress a cat at any point of time due to the gradual chronic inflammation in the essential tissues present in the bronchial walls. Inflammation in these tissues may be a result of the cat’s hypersensitivity towards specific allergen, infection or a virus. The increase in the inflammation shrinks the size of the air passages which leads to the development of asthma like symptoms. The most typical allergens that trigger feline asthma are feather pillow, perfume, hair spray and more.
