“Scabies” is a medical term for itch. The word scabies is derived from the Latin word “scratch”. This disease is found in both humans and animals. Let’s talk about scabies in dogs. Scabies is the condition which is caused by the itch mite Sarcoptes scabiei. Scabies on dogs is caused only because of these mites. Mite burrows into the dogs skin and remains there to complete its lifecycle of 21 days and then spreads to the other areas of the body if untreated or unaffected. Mites prefer living on dog’s body but human scabies are accidental. Scabies is caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei.
Other names of the disease are Mite, Itch Mite, Mange, Crusted Scabies, Norwegian Scabies, scabiei, or The Seven-Year Itch. Some of the very common symptoms of scabies are intense itching, superficial burrows, and rash. In contrast to the six-legged insects, mites are the small eight-legged parasites that burrow into the dogs skin just to produce intense itching. It is scary to know that the mites which cause scabies are not visible with the naked eyes, but are only visible through a microscope or some magnifying glass. Hence it is very necessary to approach a veterinarian in an early stage. |
