How to Prevent Lyme Disease in Dogs?
|
Dogs commonly living in the mid-Atlantic and northeastern states of United States are often infected by the Lyme disease which is triggered by the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi which is injected into the dog’s bloodstream by the deer tick.
This particular disease often causes heart and kidney problems, high fever, and arthritis. In order to prevent this disease from affecting the dogs, people needs to remember certain tips. Firstly all dogs should be given the Lyme disease vaccination. Secondly if a particular dog goes on a visit or stays in the Lyme prone area then in advance frontline medication should be applied every month. Tick collars are also an excellent option to protect the dogs from the deer tick. Thirdly the dog should given a shower with a good tick shampoo whenever he returns from a tick infested area.
Fourthly dog’s fur should be given regular brushing as it helps to remove excess fur and prevent ticks from growing inside the warm fur. Fifthly one should regularly do a close inspection of the dog’s fur especially around the ears and the armpit to keep it clean from ticks. Sixthly ticks should be removed immediately from the body or else they become bloated up by sucking blood from the dog’s body. Lastly if a tick is found on the body then it should be immediately taken to a veterinarian for correct identification. |
