An Overview of Feline Lymphoma

Lymphoma is a tumor that affects the lymphatic system. Since cells and tissues of the lymphatic system are present in different part f the cat’s body, lymphoma can occur at any place like gastrointestinal tract, lymph nodes, liver, spleen, kidney and eyes. Feline lymphoma is seen more frequently in cats which are over 9 years old.

This condition is associated with a viral infection caused by the Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV). Feline lymphoma is classified into three categories based on the points where they occur. The multicentric form of the disease occurs in multiple organs and lymph nodes. This is the most severe and fatal form of the disease. The mediastinal form is found in places like the chest cavity, thymus and lymph nodes.

Then there is the alimentary form which as the name suggests, affects the digestive tract of the cat. Treatment of feline lymphoma usually involves chemotherapy or a combination of chemotherapy and radiation therapy. About 70% of the affected cats will respond favorably to chemotherapy. This can increase their life span by two or three years, especially if the cancer goes into remission. Cats which do not respond to treatment may not survive for more than two or three months.
