What are the Medicines used for Treating Dog Diabetes?
|
Medicines that are used to treat dog diabetes are Glipizide and Vetsulin. Glipizide is a veterinary drug which helps to maintain the blood sugar level in the animal body. Glipizide is made of sulfonylurea which acts as an efficient anti-diabetic agent. Glipizide comes in the form of a tablet and is to be given orally to the pets.
The right amount of Glipizide helps in the stimulation of the pancreas which leads to the production of insulin in the blood. For this reason this particular drug is prescribed for those dogs that are suffering from insulin deficient diabetes. Thus the use of Glipizide helps to control diabetes but it does not cure the disease. The correct dose of Glipizide is usually decided by the vet and without his recommendation it should not be given to any dogs.
The second kind of medicine is the Vetsulin which is prescribed by the vet for those dogs suffering from canine diabetes mellitus. It is insulin in an intermediate form which is made up of 30% of fluid insulin which helps it to function effectively and its effect lasts for almost 8 hours. The rest 70% of Vetsulin is insulin in crystal form which acts slowly and usually stays for 11 hours. Another very effective medication to treat diabetic canines is the regular use of intravenous insulin injection. |
