How to Identify Feline Lymphoma

In order to identify feline lymphoma, it is essential that the cat’s owner should know about the symptoms and warning signs of the disease. Signs of lymphoma in cats include swollen lymph nodes, loss of appetite, poor coat color and quality, breathing difficulty, puffy face, weight loss, vomiting, diarrhea, anemia, lethargy and pale gums.

There are three main kinds of feline lymphoma and different symptoms are associated with each kind. Alimentary lymphoma is the most common kind of the disease and is associated with cancer in the organs of the digestive system. It is characterized by signs like anorexia, lethargy, weakness, vomiting, diarrhea and excessive thirst and urination. Mediastinal lymphoma affects the heart, chest cavity, trachea and esophagus. This kind of cancer is associated with symptoms like breathing difficulty and inability to exercise.

Multicentric lymphoma can occur in any part of the body, especially at the lymph nodes. If the cancer affects lymph nodes, it can cause them to enlarge. Older cats and cats which have Feline Leukemia Virus infection are more likely to develop feline leukemia. If your cat’s veterinarian suspects feline lymphoma, he may suggest a series of tests which include biopsy to make a diagnosis.
