Though the diagnosis of feline panleukopenia can be done through its symptoms like vomiting, dehydration, depression and lethargy, but tests are also available to confirm the infection. The Parvo snap test is one of the test which shows positive results when infection is present. During this test the false negatives may also occur when this test is done for canine parvo.
Molecular detection by PCR can also be performed which is fast and is also specific and sensitive alternative to detect the virus in fecal as well as in blood samples. The benefits of this test is that it confirm the agent causing the infection, ensures that feline population is free of FPV, minimize the human exposure to the virus, shortens the time which is required to confirm the clinical diagnosis of the infection. Various test kits are also available in the market to confirm the infection. The tests through these kits help to detect the presence of parvovirus in the stool.
If vaccination is done 5 to 12 days prior of the test then it can also lead to the positive result as the virus present in the vaccine will be detected. So, while using any such kits all the important information should be well considered. Other means of tests include virus isolation, antibody level measurement and PCR testing. |
