Short form of feline calicivirus is FCV. It is a common viral disease which leads to flu like symptoms. However, the cats that suffer from this disease do not face too many complications in the initial stages. But if it is left untreated, it can create complications.
This disease can be caused to any cat and anywhere because it is universal in nature. This virus spreads when any infected cat comes in contact with healthy cat, directly or indirectly. The eye discharge, saliva or nose discharge that is infected can spread this virus. This disease happens with other respiratory disorders. These disorders include chlamydiosis and attacks by feline herpes virus. Some of the symptoms of feline calicivirus are worth noting.
These symptoms include loss of appetite, weakness, high fever and arthritis. Some other chronic symptoms include development of pus filled sores on tongue, lips and nose. Sometimes, when the situation becomes worse there might even be development of pneumonia. Diagnosis can be done looking into the symptoms and history of cat’s health. The vet may prescribe a few tests which can help in diagnosis. After the disease is confirmed, the vet may start antibiotics treatment. This treatment won’t affect the problem of calicivirus. But it can definitely keep the infections and pain away. If the cat experiences breathing problem then oxygen must be administered. |
