Do Dogs Suffer From Spondylosis?
|
Spondylosis in dog is a disease in which osteophytes grow on the lateral as well as ventral surfaces of the dog’s body. Osteophytes are also known as bone spur which are bony projections formed along the joint of the dog’s body. The reason leading to the formation of spondylosis is the increase in the damage of the joint surface area.
The presence of such bony growth can be found only when the veterinarian is examining the dog using radiographs. Studios have shown that spondylosis rarely gives rise to any problems in the dogs. The spinal cord of the dog does not get compressed but will become immobilize in the area where bony spurs are present. For the dog suffering from spondylosis formation of bridges occur along the ventral part of their body. In the dogs where spondylosis has reached to a critical stage leads to formation of rigid and inflexible back bone.
Besides dogs spondylosis growth is also seen in whales, cats, bulls as well as humans. The exact reason behind the growth of spondylosis is still unknown but it is believed that genetics as well as diet of the dog play an important role in causing spondylosis. Most of the time older dogs are affected by spondylosis.
