Can Dogs have Diabetes?
|
Diabetes is a common disease among all dogs. Diabetes in dogs can be caused due to various kinds of reasons. Canine diabetes can be triggered due to obesity. But in most cases obesity is caused due to diabetes.
The best way to check if the dog is overweight or not is: by feeling its rib cage. If the ribs can be felt easily then the dog is not obese. Moreover dogs between the age group of 7 to 9 are more vulnerable to diabetes. Compared to smaller dogs bigger breeds fall prey to diabetes more easily. Female canines are two times more likely to develop diabetes than male dogs. Thus these prove that dogs can have diabetes very easily.
To detect whether a dog is diabetic or not one need to look for the following symptoms like excessive water consumption which leads to excessive urination, lethargy which causes loss of interest in daily activities which in turn leads to obesity or excess loss of weight. Feeling of laziness is very common among most dogs but if it fails to actively response to orders then it is serious. In such cases the dog needs to be taken immediately to a good vet. Other than these signs high diabetes level in the blood causes blindness in dogs. It also sometimes increases its appetite. |
