Can Dogs have Depression?

Dogs like the humans do suffer from depression. Due to depression they stop eating, drink very less water and become lethargic. Depression in dogs is caused by different factors which are not similar to those that are responsible for human depression. It is commonly caused due to chemical imbalance in the body, a change in the scenery or the weather and due to grief. In order to fight depression a dog owner has to follow certain norms. Firstly, to look for the possible physical causes. If none is found then one needs to inspect the mental causes. This might be the loss of a friend with whom the dog was very close. It might be a dog, or a kid or a member of the family.

Dogs are emotionally very attached to their in-home playmates. The absence of the playmate can cause severe depression in dogs. Dogs are known to grieve to a serious point and it is very difficult to make them forget their grief. If a dog is slow in responding to his surroundings then it is understood that something is worrying it. In such cases the owner needs to take the initiatives to make the dog’s life more fun filled. In order to cure such depression among dogs vets often prescribe anti-depressant drugs. Depression is an invisible enemy among dogs which left unattended for long can cause life-threatening conditions.
