Canines just the same as humans can suffer from cancer, this includes the many different types of cancer such as; hemangiosarcomas, histiocytoma, lymphoma, mammary cancer, mast cell tumors, osteosarcoma, testicular tumors and others. The treatments are also similar to human treatments and can include radiation therapy.
This is also a disease that is more prevalent in some breeds more than others, and in most cases affects dogs that are older, rather than younger canines. Chemotherapy is one of the treatments involved in canine cancer treatment, along with medications like prednisone, fentanyl patches for pain and other pain relievers. Medications are often prescribed for the pet to enhance the appetite, to cure nausea, dehydration and electrolyte imbalances.
Some types of cancer can be put in remission in canines the same as with humans, while others cannot be stopped even with proper treatments. Cancer can strike animals with no prior symptoms or warning, and will need treatment to begin immediately. |
