How to diagnose cat asthma?

A veterinary physician may conduct more than one test in order to confirm the presence of asthma in your cat. The primary and basic test is the chest x-ray which clearly shows the signs of inflammation in the bronchial tubes of the lungs. Secondly, a complete diagnostic test is done to rule out the possibility of other diseases or conditions with similar symptoms.

A complete blood count is done in order to check the presence of eosinophils, a type of white blood cell. In case, the eosinophils presence comes higher than the normal value, chances of bacterial or parasitic attack become indicative. In rare cases, a heartworm test is conducted on the suffering cat which if positive clearly indicates the infestation of a harmful micro-organism in its body. Further, Bronchoscopy is suggested as another diagnostic measure, in case the above measures fail to confirm the presence of asthma in the cat. This test is only conducted by a specialist who thoroughly examines the airway of the cat with the aid of a fiberoptic scope.

This tool can also be used to gently scratch the swab of mucus or other fluid collected at the bronchial tubes and airways for further examination.
