Diabetes is a common disease among dogs. Since there are no external factors which are responsible for the formation of the disease diabetes cannot be prevented or controlled easily. The main causes which trigger diabetes among dogs are family genes and other infectious viruses and diseases like Cushing’s disease.

The use of regular dose of steroids also increases the risk of canine diabetes. A dog which is suffering from diabetes needs proper care. Vets usually recommend a change its normal diet. Diabetic dogs are usually recommended to be given food rich in protein and low in carbohydrate especially if the dog is regularly feed dry food. The disadvantage of dry food is that it usually contains high level of carbohydrates which helps to the development of diabetes. In comparison to this, foods low in carbohydrates and rich in protein helps to control the blood glucose level in the dog’s body.

It is very important to maintain the blood sugar level in the body of a diabetic dog because if the diabetes is left unchecked then it can become ketotic which can lead serious consequences like rapid breathing, vomiting, depression and weakness. Sometimes it also results in death. Diabetic dogs should be encouraged to take part in regular activities in order to keep them active and to prevent them from becoming obese.
