If you want your dog to get temporary relief from such symptoms, you can try over the counter medications which don’t require any prescription. However, it is worth noting that not all dogs respond positively to over the counter medications. Thus, it is vital to consult the veterinarian before doing so. Some of the commonly used over the counter medications in dog allergy are:

  • Diphenhydramine hydrochloride is extremely effective antihistamine. But it is also known for its sedative effects.

  • Flaxseed oil capsules: This helps in lubricating the skin and keeps away various skin allergies.

  • Claritin: This medication helps in treating itching problem in dogs.

  • Chlor-Trimeton: The ingredient chlorpheniramine helps in treating skin itching.

  • Fish oil capsule: Omega 3 fatty acid in fish oil capsules help in easing skin allergies.

These over the counter medications will ease symptoms of allergy like itching, flaking, skin rashes, coughing, nasal and eyes discharge.  In case where allergy is acute it would be better to consult the veterinarian and depend on prescription medications.
