What are the Common Fungal Infections Affecting Dogs?

Aspergillosis: This is a fungal infection which is mainly seen among young dogs. The fungus affects the nasal chambers. This leads to nasal pain, lethargy and sneezing. Lesions develop in several parts of the body. This infection needs apt treatment because otherwise the infection can even affect the eyes.

Cryptococcosis: This is a systemic fungal disease. It is studies to affect the respiratory track at the most along with eyes, skin and the whole body. In the initial stage the infection causes lesions in the lungs. But thereafter it spreads rapidly and affects cerebral cavities and eyes. Organs like kidneys, lymph nodes, and liver might also be badly affected. Dogs generally below one year are prone to this.

Histoplasmosis: This is a fungal infection which is not contagious in nature. Bird manure provides the environment for the fungus. Normally this fungus affects the lungs of the dogs. But in some rare and acute cases, the infection spreads throughout the body and shows chronic symptoms like high fever, dizziness, diarrhea, weight loss and weakness.

Blastomycosis: This is a fungal disease that is most usually found in the Mississippi River area and around the Great Lakes. In this infection there is presence of lesions in various parts of the organs. This may lead to enlargement of lymph nodes and problems like respiratory problems, coughing, nasal discharge, ulcers and glaucoma.

Valley Fever: This is also a fungal disease found mostly in the dry areas. Infection mainly occurs due to inhalation of spores from the soil.  Symptoms of this infection include dry cough, respiratory problems, weight loss, lethargy, eye problems and loss of appetite.
