What are the causes of Diabetes in Dogs?

Since not many external factors are responsible for causing diabetes in dog, most its causes can’t be controlled or prevented. Hereditary is the one of the major cause for canine diabetes. That means if a female dog have diabetes then her offspring are more likely to inherit the disease from her. Thus for a breeder it is very essential to verify the medical history of the dog which is to be bred. The breeder also needs to do a thorough check up of the dogs meant for breeding to ensure that it is not suffering from any severe health conditions which can affect its offspring. Other than family genes, infectious viruses and diseases can also cause canine diabetes.

For example the disease which causes pancreas disorder can lead to irregular production of insulin in the dog’s body which in turn can raise the blood sugar level thus causing diabetes. An example of such disease is the Cushing’s disease which is capable of triggering diabetes in dogs. Another factor which raises the risk of diabetes in dogs is the use of steroids. Steroids disturb the normal performance of the pancreas due which insulin production in the body gets affected. Thus dogs that are given regular steroids shot ultimately suffer from diabetes. Canine diabetes is most common among dogs that are between 7 to 9 years of age.
