Can Cats have Strokes?

Though it was widely believed that only humans get affected by strokes, recent studies have proved that both dogs and cats are also victims of stroke. But unlike humans the effect of stroke in cats is not so fatal. Like humans cats also commonly suffer from two types of strokes, Hemorrhagic and Ischemic stroke.

The most effective way of reducing the risk of feline strokes is through the use of B6 vitamin and B12 vitamin which is also similar to humans. The feline stroke is caused due to the disruption of the blood flow to the cat’s brain by the blood vessels. This obstructs the release of glucose and oxygen thus resulting in damaging the brain cells. This is known as a cerebrovascular accident.  If the blood vessels clog up within themselves, it is known as ischemic stroke and if the blood vessel carrying blood vessels breaks causing the blood to escape into the brain, it is called as Hemorrhagic stroke. 80 percent of cats suffer from Ischemic strokes.

In the Ischemic stroke either the clotting of blood takes place within the blood vessels inside the cat’s brain or in any parts of the cat’s body. If the blood clot is inside the brain then it is known as Thrombotic stroke and if it is in other parts of the body it is known as embolic stroke.
