Can cats have High Blood Sugar?

Like humans cats also suffer from high blood sugar levels in the body which can prove to be fatal in most of the cases. If feline high blood sugar is not treated at the right time then it can prove to be dangerous. Thus at the first sign of diabetes it is necessary to take the cat to a good vet for proper medical treatment.

Cats are commonly affected by two types of diabetes, Type I or the Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus and Type II or the Non-Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus. Since feline diabetes is a permanent condition it is necessary to get the cat checked by a vet from time to time in order to keep the blood glucose level under control. High blood sugar in cats can cause diabetic nephropathy which leads to nervous system and kidney malfunction. Sometimes it causes infections in the cat’s urinary tracks.

Another harmful effect of high blood sugar level in cats is that it triggers gastrointestinal diseases which cause constant vomiting and diarrhea among 30 percent of cats while 50 percent of cats suffer from irregular vomiting. Apart from the above mentioned diseases, feline diabetes also causes hepatic lipidosis which causes damage to the liver and if it is not treated at the early stage then it can prove to be fatal.
