Can Cats Have Epilepsy?

Feline epilepsy also known as seizures are usually caused by drug overdose, infections, kidney failure or metabolic disorders, and trauma. In most cases feline epilepsy is a genetic disease. The actual causes that trigger epilepsy among cats are still unknown.

Epilepsy causes an unorganized firing of the nerves present inside the cat’s brain. In a normal condition the nerves send out impulses in a consistent and synchronized manner, thus maintaining accurately timed thoughts and movement. Thus cats suffering from epilepsy usually lack consciousness or become ignorant of their environment and have frequent uncoordinated bodily actions. Epilepsy is a disease which can be restricted but cannot be cured.

Feline seizures can be divided into three types depending on the intensity, status epilepticus, grand mal and petit mal. In most cases the grand and petit mal seizures are not very fatal while the status epilepticus is a deadly and a life threatening disease. Status epilepticus can cause damage to the organs and can alarmingly raise the internal temperature of the body. Such health conditions often results in death. Veterinarians recommend the use of anticonvulsant medications to cure acute symptoms of feline epilepsy. It should be remembered that feline epileptic seizures cannot be treated but only its brutality and its frequency can be controlled.
