Can Cats have Acne?

Like humans, cats also experience the formation of acne, called “feline acne”.

The sebaceous glands found underneath the skin of cats are connected to their surface based hair follicles. These glands are responsible for the secretion of a chemical called sebum which lubricates the coat and skin of this animal.

It is the release of this essential substance, sebum, which significantly prevents and protects the hair and coat from dryness. Cats distressed with the problem of acne have blocked sebaceous glands which further leads to the formation of black heads. Feline acne can take a severe form as a lifelong disease if not treated on time. This form of acne is commonly observed in the areas of lips and chin of a cat. Unlike humans, acne in cats may progress at the age of one and continue for the entire life.

This disease is characterized by the appearance of tiny plugs like blackheads around the chin and lips. In the later stages, these blackheads may progress in the form of redness, bumps on the face which can be very itchy at times. Sometimes, feline acne can be chronic. In cases of serious outbursts of chronic feline acne, the pet can experience immense loss of hair and pigmentation.
