Cat Epilepsy Treatment
|
Feline epilepsy cannot be cured but proper treatment can decrease its severity and frequency of its attacks. Though medications cannot treat the disease but it can help to reduce its harmful signs and symptoms. The best recommended way to treat idiopathic epilepsy, which is the most common form of feline epilepsy, is through the use of anticonvulsant medications. Drug like Phenobarbital is the most effective anticonvulsant medicine which is given orally to cats.
During the early treatment phase the use of this particular drug causes few temporary side effects among cats like too much drinking of water which leads to frequent urinating, excessive eating and a feeling of lethargic. Another common example of anticonvulsant drug is valium or diazepam which is also given orally to the cats but during emergency it is given through intravenous. Diazepam is recommended by vets to treat feline status epilepticus. Bromide is another type of anticonvulsant drug which when used along with Phenobarbital effectively helps to reduce the frequency of seizure attacks and its severity. The use of bromide is commonly recommended by vets for those cats who are suffering from epilepsy and also have liver disease.
Apart from these treatments blood test is also essential to observe the cat’s nature of response to medications and also to provide protection against the harmful effects of the anticonvulsant drugs and also from the epileptic seizures. |
