The signs of canine influenza are similar to those of humans, they can run a temperature, they sneeze, cough, have nasal discharge and other human like symptoms. This can be seen for as long as two weeks or it can be a shorter duration and in some cases can turn into pneumonia depending on the overall health of the dog. In some cases an underlying infection can cause respiratory difficulties that can cause the progression on pneumonia.
In many cases the canine will not need medication to battle canine influenza, but in cases of severe influenza or swine flu the canine will be prescribed medication to relieve symptoms and an antibiotic that will fight the virus to shorten the duration.
The death rate of influenza in canines is very low, however in some cases where the dog is elderly or has other health concerns the flu or swine flu can be life threatening. |
