Cancer treatment for Canines
|
Treating cancer in canines is similar to treating cancer in humans, in cases where there are tumors surgery is often done to remove the cancerous tumor cells. There is radiation treatment that is done the same as it would be for a person with cancer and has the same type of side effects.
Radiation treatments have the same side effects for dogs as it does for humans, including the loss of hair, which means the dog’s skin will need to be protected from sunburn. The canine’s hair just like humans will grow back and often times grows back white rather than the canine’s previous fur colors.
In some cases the canine is prescribed medication to help keep the cancer symptoms under control and to help keep them pain free much the same as a human with cancer would be treated. Amputation is also a choice in some cases when it is bone cancer the canine is dealing with to prevent the diseased cells from spreading to other parts of the body including the organs. |
