Advantage Side Effects
Advantage (imidacloprid) is a flea treatment drug that is considered to be one of the safest preventatives available for dogs and cats. Advantage is a topical medication that protects dogs and cats from flea infestations. Like all drugs, Advantage can have adverse effects on some dogs and/or cats.
Advantage can cause itching. It can also cause inappetance, hyperactivity, and lethargy in some animals.
Some complaints have been made concerning a residue that lingers at the site of the application. One of the most common side effects associated with the use of Advantage is a wet or greasy spot left on a dog or cat’s skin. The wetness is more frequently seen in cats and can last for up to 24 hours. Advantage tastes bad, therefore when a cat tries to lick if off their skin, it causes drooling.
Advantage for dogs should not be used on cats. Advantage made specifically for dogs is too strong for cats and can result in symptoms indicative of an overdose. Advantage overdose symptoms include muscle twitching and loss of coordination.
If you observe any signs of side effects in your pet after applying a dose of Advantage, contact your veterinarian immediately.
