Hypothyroidism in cats is when they have a disorder that is connected with the thyroid gland. The gland helps to produce the hormones of the thyroid. The reason why the thyroid needs to work right is because it can cause problems with the metabolic rate if it is not regulating the way it should be. In many cases the rate decreases and slows down if a cat has Hypothyroidism. They will not be very active and usually sleep a lot or either develop other types of diseases.

The good news is that it is a very rare and uncommon thing for a cat to have Hypothyroidism. It is usually found in big breeds with dogs. The most common type of disorder with cats is Hyperthyroidism. It is more common for a cat that is overweight to have Hypothyroidism then a smaller cat. However, cats that are not overweight might struggle more with hpyerthroidism.

In order to find out if a cat has Hypothyroidism they will go through a series of tests and once the tests come back positive then the treatment for Hypothyroidism will begin. If treatment is put off for cats then the symptoms might become severe and even cause infections.
